A Choired Taste
Community Choir
We know that singing heals the soul and our community choir “A CHOIRed Taste” certainly does that and we would like to put a spotlight on this awesome group!
Take a second to imagine the sounds of Abba, The Carpenters, Westlife, George Ezra, and The Greatest Showman. Some of the best artists around, with sold-out Arena, vocals on point, and an army of fans following their every move.
Now imagine a CHOIRed taste. A bunch of 60-somethings (and maybe a few young en’s) trying their best to hold their teeth in never mind a tune, meeting up every Wednesday to try song no 72 out of their “not what to sing playlist”, They are instructed by their Choir leader Lynn (who does an epic job of keeping them in check) who puts together an awesome show of all time classics mixed with modern day pop, west end musicals and theatrical props to lighten the mood.
Avoiding the housework, partners, and kids, the group rocks up to the care homes, gala, and community events to entertain the local folk with renditions of Ce Cera and Does Your Mother Know (which don’t sound half bad, to be honest). Reading the lyrics from a projector and screen not only is their hearing on the way out, but so is their eyesight, they sing their hearts out and give it their all, creating a sea of smiles to brighten everyone’s day and infuse their audiences with that feel-good factor.
With no fuss or expectations, this group is one of a kind. Leading the helm is Choir Leader Lynn who formed the group 5 years ago, purely because she has a passion for singing and wants to spread the joy and happiness that singing your heart out creates. Giving up her free time, she rallies her troop of singers to her weekly choir practice before releasing them out into the community to provide free entertainment that can challenge any top 10 artists.
The choir is attended by all generations, with their youngest participant being 10 and their oldest who is in their late 80s, they are armed with personalized t-shirts, microphones, and hearing aids, hitting the town to stretch their vocals.
Fun fact! An a CHOIRed taste has also been involved in a number of productions with CAST and has been involved in documentaries around how singing for fun improves your health and well-being as well as an independent production of Edlington’s very own Jubilee Choir rendition of “Rise up and Serve” and so as much as the aim of the choir is to bring people together for a good old sing song, the wider impact this group has on its participants is more than meets the eye. They are a support system and extended family for each other, and, those who are lucky enough to witness their performances, get an inside peek into the benefits of singing, regardless of your age or whether you can hold a note or not.
Have you ever seen a person who has been diagnosed with dementia light up when the choir sings a song that triggers a memory? This impact alone is lifechanging
